Planning Cycling Holidays - Easy Mode
Prologue
We like to do bicycle touring, pack a tent on our bikes, add some
luggage and go enjoy cycling for 2 weeks.
We have been to many countries, but this year we decided to do this as
relaxed and easy as possible and stay in the Netherlands.
Planning
- Fetch GPX tracks for all LF-routes.
- Add them to gpx.studio.
- Eyeball where you want to go, hide, delete & cut-up routes as needed.
- Notice how you now have a bunch of disconnected routes and remember that you always fail at connecting routes in gpx.studio.
- Go to Fietsersbond Routeplanner, tell it to plan a route from your start to your destination, select "prefer LF Network".
- Remember to tick "avoid ferries" because of low water in the rivers.
- The route planer now draws a more or less straight line through the Netherlands from A to B.
- Add a bunch of "Via" points to massage the route into what you want. Just adding the cut-points from step 3 is usually enough.
- Download the GPX file.
- Open it in gpx.studio and look for camp-sites every n kilometres.
- Add "Via" points for the camp-sites.
- Enjoy.
Epilogue
Planning a bicycling vacation in the Netherlands is very easy. The infrastructure is amazing. When following the LF-routes you can be sure to cycle through nature, along quiet cycle routes and mostly avoid big cities. At the same time LF-routes lead you through smaller cities and villages so you can always find food at supermarkets or bakeries. There are also many small camp-sites along the LF-routes (search for "minicamping").
