Planning Cycling Holidays - Easy Mode

Prologue

We like to do bicycle touring, pack a tent on our bikes, add some luggage and go enjoy cycling for 2 weeks. bike.jpg We have been to many countries, but this year we decided to do this as relaxed and easy as possible and stay in the Netherlands.

Planning

  1. Fetch GPX tracks for all LF-routes.
  2. Add them to gpx.studio.
  3. Eyeball where you want to go, hide, delete & cut-up routes as needed.
  4. Notice how you now have a bunch of disconnected routes and remember that you always fail at connecting routes in gpx.studio.
  5. Go to Fietsersbond Routeplanner, tell it to plan a route from your start to your destination, select "prefer LF Network".
  6. Remember to tick "avoid ferries" because of low water in the rivers.
  7. The route planer now draws a more or less straight line through the Netherlands from A to B.
  8. Add a bunch of "Via" points to massage the route into what you want. Just adding the cut-points from step 3 is usually enough.
  9. Download the GPX file.
  10. Open it in gpx.studio and look for camp-sites every n kilometres.
  11. Add "Via" points for the camp-sites.
  12. Enjoy.

Epilogue

Planning a bicycling vacation in the Netherlands is very easy. The infrastructure is amazing. When following the LF-routes you can be sure to cycle through nature, along quiet cycle routes and mostly avoid big cities. At the same time LF-routes lead you through smaller cities and villages so you can always find food at supermarkets or bakeries. There are also many small camp-sites along the LF-routes (search for "minicamping").
